Margaret River, Western Australia – An exciting opening day at North Point kicked off the second stop on the World Championship Tour – The Drug Aware Margaret River Pro. For the first time in World Surf League history the world’s best surfers battled it out at the famed right hand point, reef break located about 10 miles north of Margaret River in four – six foot / 1.5 – 2 metre surf conditions.

Reigning Margaret River Pro – 2016 event winner, Sebastian Zeitz of Hawaii, set the bar at The Drug Aware Pro with the events first perfect 10. After a slow start to his match up with championship tour rookie Ethan Ewing – Australia and Brazilian dynamo Filipe Toledo, Zeitz found the sort of wave North Point is known for, a long open draining tube that allowed him an exit. Sebastian Zeitz now cruises into Round 3 while Ewing and Toledo will battle to avoid elimination in Round 2.

The opening heat of round one witnessed 11 time World Surf League champion, Kelly Slater, USA – take the win against three time World Surf League champion Mick Fanning, Australia and tour rookie Leonardo Fioravanti, Italy. Slater charged into North Point barrels to claim the heat and take a win against the Italian charger, who beat Slater at this event last year. Kelly Slater will now progress into round 3 while Fanning and Fioravanti will move into elimination round 2.

Event organisers will reconvene at 6.30 am local time to reassess the conditions and make the next call. Organisers have the luxury of being able to move the event to extreme tube break at The Box, or return to main break at Margaret River. This World Surf League event is fantastic, as it is a mobile surf event and will test all competitors who are competing in a variety of powerful Western Australian waves in the beautiful South – West region of Margaret River.
